DISCIPLINE AND STUDENT CONDUCT

Every student at Manti High School has the right to a safe, orderly school environment that supports learning, achievement, and appropriate, enjoyable social interaction with other students. The following guidelines have been devised by faculty, administration, students and parents to ensure that type of environment for everyone who learns or works at our school. Basically the underlying expectation is that each student conduct him or herself in class and in the school with actions that demonstrate consideration of the rights and feelings of others.

To enjoy the benefits of a free society, an individual must develop and internalize a set of values that are based on honesty, responsibility, integrity, hard work, self-control, and consideration of others. We invite you to use your opportunities at Manti High School to develop and strengthen those qualities in your own character.

 1. Expectations: The student expectations are as follows:

a. Students have the responsibility to maintain regular school attendance, to make a conscientious effort in classroom work, and to adhere to school rules and regulations. Most of all, students share with the administration and faculty a responsibility to develop a climate within the school which is conducive to learning. Every teacher has the right to teach and each student has the right to learn. Conduct which disrupts teaching or learning will not be tolerated.

b. Students have the responsibility to protect and take care of the school’s property and to assist the school staff in operating a school that is safe for everyone.

c. Students have the responsibility to respect the rights of fellow students, teachers, administrators, and all others who are involved in the educational process.

d. Students have the responsibility to be on time to each of their classes, to be prepared with all required materials, and to stay on task for the entire class period.

e. Students have the responsibility to refrain from any distribution or display of materials which are obscene, libelous, or which advocate the commission of unlawful acts. The responsibility includes consulting in advance with school personnel if there is any question about the appropriateness of materials or actions.

 2. Conduct in Building: Please demonstrate consideration of others and your school by helping keep it clean, use the garbage cans for litter and refrain from actions that damage school property inside or out. Please do not run, shove, push, or crowd others. (There are many halls and school areas that will be congested at times.) Also please use quiet voice tones and avoid loud boisterous behavior.

 3. Cafeteria: You may choose to eat school lunch, bring your own lunch, or go home for lunch. If you bring your lunch, please eat it in the cafeteria. Please return trays to the tray window, and clean all paper and refuse from the tables by the end of the lunch period. Any students who eat off campus must be back to school on time or the campus may be closed to them. Lunches may be paid for in the office.

 4. Assemblies: Assemblies are a regularly scheduled part of the curriculum and as such are designed to be educational as well as entertaining experiences. They provide an opportunity in school to learn formal audience behavior. Regardless of the type of program, courtesy demands that the student-body be respectful and appreciative. Talking, whispering, whistling, stamping of feet and booing are inappropriate. Yelling is appropriate only at pep assemblies. Those who violate this will be subject to dismissal from the assembly and possible denial of further participation or viewing of the assemblies. (Attendance at assemblies is expected of all students and faculty.)

a. Assemblies must be sponsored by a class, club, or school organization that has a faculty advisor.

b. Script must be approved by the advisor first and then by an administrator.

c. The advisor in charge of the assembly will have the responsibility of

submitting a complete list of all students participating in the assembly.

 5. Automobiles and Parking Lots:

a. Students must park in student parking areas only! Teacher parking is along both sidewalks in the front parking lot.

b. Driving from school grounds during school hours is not permitted, except during lunch.

c. Please be extra cautious when driving on the school grounds.

d. No student parking behind the school by the lunch room or autoshop.

 e. Students must not loiter in the parking area.

f. The school assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in the school lots. Cars must be parked in an orderly fashion and should remain locked. The maximum speed on campus is 10 mph. Violation of motor vehicle rules will result in the loss of privilege of bringing a vehicle to school and/or ticketing by police.

 6. Bus Riding Rules. All busses to games or field trips are scheduled by the school and each bus is under the direction of a faculty member. All students are required to travel to and from the activity on their assigned bus. Reasonable dress and conduct appropriate to the situation are expected. Students will be released only to parents! Students must remain seated and not change seats once the bus is in motion. No fighting, yelling or throwing of anything allowed on bus. Please help keep the bus clean and safe.

 7. Gym Area: Students are not permitted within the gym, weight room, or physical education area without approved adult supervision. Food and beverages are not allowed these areas. Appropriate guidelines for clothing and footwear will be established by the physical education and athletic departments. Only athletic shoes with appropriate soles are allowed on the gym floor.

  8. Library: Students are expected to use the library as a quiet study area. Please go there to learn and give others that same opportunity. To be in the library during class time a student must have a pass from his/her teacher. We do not allow food or drinks in the library to protect our books.

 9. Affection: Students are expected to exercise good judgment in interaction with boyfriends/girlfriends. School officials may remind students of appropriate behavior and may contact parents if not corrected by students.

 10. Classroom: A student is expected to comply with all requests of teachers regarding classroom control and discipline as well as academic work. No student is permitted to leave the classroom without permission of the teacher. Teachers who request a student to leave the room as disciplinary action, must notify the office through the intercom system and direct the pupil either to the vice-principal or to the principal's office immediately. Only one student at a time is allowed to leave the classroom and must have an official hall pass.
