EARLY GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Philosophy:
The School District’s primary goal is to develop individuals with the knowledge, skills, and human characteristics necessary to live meaningfully as individuals and as positive contributors to society. In order to achieve this goal, the School District has set up experiences for students that can develop these skills at an earlier rate.
Twenty-four credits are generally required for graduation from the high schools at South Sanpete School District; however, a student may qualify for early graduation based upon the following:
1. Proficiency on the ACT
- A student must achieve a composite score of 28 or higher with no sub-test lower than 26; and
- A committee of five teachers must review the high school graduation requirements, compare them with the student’s achievements in his/her classes, and reach a majority conclusion that each student has indeed mastered the standards of the high school graduation requirements.
2. Completion of 24 Credits before Designated Graduation Date
Any secondary public school student who has completed all required courses or demonstrated mastery of required skills and competencies may, with the approval of the student, the student’s parent or guardian, and an authorized local school
official, graduate at any time as indicated in Utah Code Section 53A-15-102. The District shall apply for ½ of the scholarship awarded to each student who graduates early. The District shall aid the early graduating student to apply for a Centennial Scholarship provided under Utah Code Section 53A-15-102 (3)(a).
+ Early Graduation Notification:
A student must give written notification to the principal or superintendent of his/her intention for early graduation by March 15 of the year in which they desire to graduate. The student must also receive prior approval from his/her parent or guardian and meet the qualifications mentioned in items one or two listed above.
Other Graduation Options:
1. If a student enters the District’s educational system at the beginning of the year when his or her age group become seniors, the following classes must bcompleted with a GPA of 2.5 or better and no grade lower than a C- in order to qualify for a diploma or certificate:
- Language Arts (Senior English)
- Math (Geometry or above)
- Social Studies (U.S. Studies) or (World Civ. .5 and U.S. Gov. Cit. .5)
- Science (Chemistry, Biology, or Physics)
- Arts (Music, Art, or Drama) or Healthy LifestylesVocational Class
- Financial Literacy .5
2. If a student enters the District’s educational system at the beginning of the year when his or her age group become juniors, the following classes must be completed with a GPA of 2.5 or better and no grade lower than a C- in order to qualify for a diploma or certificate:
- Language Arts (Junior English)
- Math (Algebra I or above)
- Social Studies (U.S. Studies)
- Science (Chemistry, Biology, or Physics)
- Arts (Music, Art, or Drama)
- Healthy Lifestyles or a Vocational Class
3. 3. If a student enters the system at the beginning of the sophomore year, required classes must be taken with a GPA of 2.8 or better and no grade lower than a C-. If this requirement is fulfilled, the remainder of the school years may be spent
as a regular student. Six credit hours of electives may be waived.
4. 4. The above options are presented for principals and counselors to follow. If extenuating circumstances or complications make these options impractical in meeting a student’s academic needs, principals may submit an alternative plan for the
Superintendent’s approval.
5. 5. Students who are seeking a diploma through Option 1, 2, or 3 listed above may be subject to UBSCT Testing and/or other State mandated guidelines indicated in the current Utah law and Administrative Rule R277-705.
