Educational Philosophy and Goals

Philosophy:
Every South Sanpete School District student is entitled to be educated in a supportive learning environment by skilled teachers who take advantage of available research findings in education, provide appropriate and productive learning experiences, promote academic excellence, and encourage the development of ethical character and physical well-being. Further, each student shall be provided opportunities to gain the skills necessary to function in a democratic society, to make appropriate decisions, and prepare to meet the challenges of a changing world, higher education, and the world of work. These skills and others listed in Utah Code 53A-1a-104 and 106 are desired characteristics of the schools in South Sanpete School District.

South Sanpete Board of Education Goals (3-9-11)
The South Sanpete Board of Education, in collaboration with administration, faculty, staff, and the community, has developed a    four-year educational vision and set two strategic long-range goals to improve the educational opportunities for all students of the South Sanpete School District.

The Board expects all educators of the District to fully support, participate, and make significant contributions toward accomplishing these goals.

  1. Develop high functioning and focused Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) within each school and between schools to improve instruction and increase student achievement.
  2. Focus on more rigorous and relevant curriculum in preparing all students to be college and/or career ready.

South Sanpete Board of Education Vision and Mission Statements (9-12-12)

Vision Statement:
“Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Challenges and Opportunities”

Mission Statement:
“The Mission of the South Sanpete School District is to improve student achievement by providing challenging educational opportunities for all students in an environment where they are safe and can experience success.”


Basic Educational Philosophy and Guidelines:
The District shall establish an ongoing process of evaluation to measure the extent to which these guidelines are being met and continuously implement improvements to the instructional program.
A. Instructional Principles:

  1. Every student shall be considered a worthwhile, valuable individual.
  2. Every student shall be considered capable of learning which results in progress toward appropriate educational goals as identified in SEP’s and SEOP’s.
  3. Every student shall be treated with respect regardless of intellectual, physical, religious, ethnic, gender or socio/economic status.
  4. Every student shall be expected to perform at a level commensurate with the student’s ability, age, and rate of personal development.
  5. Every student shall be challenged to strive for the highest level of academic performance possible.

B. Instructional Environment:

  1. Instructional programs shall be offered in an atmosphere that is conducive to physical and emotional health and safety.
  2. Instructional programs shall be offered in a wholesome environment that promotes appropriate school conduct and encourages a cooperative approach to learning and the active participation of all students.
  3. Instruction shall be designed to cultivate student interest and stimulate learning.

C. Instructional Content Shall:

  1. Comply with State and Federal requirements.
  2. Include training in basic skills and provide opportunities for students to learn, read, write, speak, calculate, and master other practical skills needed for success in the adult world.
  3. Focus upon helping students learn to reason and acquire course-related knowledge, skill, and understanding.
  4. Provide opportunities for students to learn through direct personal experiences as well as through the experiences of others.
  5. Provide opportunities for students to discover the world of nature and learn about and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of cultures and societies.
  6. Encourage lifelong learning by providing opportunities for students to learn how to study as well as provide exercises in critical thinking and problem solving.
  7. Incorporate the ideals of human liberty, equality, justice, and ethical principles.
  8. Promote the values of ethical character, individual responsibility, economic sufficiency, civic usefulness, and personal health and hygiene.
  9. Respond to emerging societal needs for developing productive, healthy, law-abiding citizens.

D. Instructional Responsibility:

  1. Teachers shall foster student progress, involvement, and coverage of appropriate content as outlined by the Utah Core Standards and provide instruction based upon current research findings in classroom management, instructional delivery, interaction with students, instructional planning, and professional development.
  2. Education is a shared responsibility. Students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and other staff, as necessary, shall work cooperatively for the good of each student.
  3. Student achievement shall be monitored and communicated to parents through report cards, at parent conferences, electronically, and other occasions as necessary.
  4. Instructional quality shall be monitored through a variety of performance evaluations in accordance with the District’s Teacher Evaluation Policy. Curriculum guides and ongoing staff training shall be provided.
  5. Instructional delivery shall provide for the development of the personal, social, academic and vocational potentials of students.
  6. Teachers shall cooperate and share resources and ideas as a way of improving instructional processes.
