Minutes from Manti Elementary School Community Council Meeting

Held November 9, 2016

"Leader in Me" Updates

The open house for the Leader in  Me turned into a great parent training on the 7 habits taught by Tony Blauer. All of our teachers are now trained and certified in the 7 habits.

Our Leadership day will be March 15th .

SafeUt

The district has purchased an app program called SafeUt to help parents and teachers identify bullying, cyberbullying, gang activity, drug and alcohol activity and more. At the high school and middle school level each student will be asked to download the app. There is a tipline and crisis line that can be anonymous. As a parent of an elementary student you can download the app or visit the website through the South Sanpete School District website. Click on the SafeUT Crisisline a page will open up where you type the name of the school or city and a message. You submit the tip and an alert will be immediately sent to Karen Soper, officer Kenny Kirkham, and Tony Blauer. They can then investigate the problem to better help our students.

SAGE scores and the Distinguished Title 1 School Award

We have seen continual growth and improvement with our SAGE scores, which are one of the highest in our school district. Because of this, we have been given the Distinguished Title 1 School Award, and have been nominated to apply for a grant to receive a National award. They will pick 2 Title 1 Schools from Utah to win the award.

Emergency Preparedness

Because of the recent bomb threat at the high school we have been better trained and prepared. We learned not to evacuate all of the students to a previously told area, so as not to inform the bomber where all the students will be. There will be a soft lock down, each classroom will be searched and paths in the school will be cleared to send students to. The district is purchasing School Messenger which will allow Principal Soper to do a voice message that will instantly go to parent's Facebook, twitter, cell phones and home phones. More master keys are being made so officers can quickly get into each classroom. All of the classrooms will be identified on the outside and inside, and then maps will be made of the school.

Union Street Sidewalk Update

Principal Soper wrote a grant to get a sidewalk put in on the north side of the school. It made it through the first cuts, we are very hopeful  that it will happen. We will find out in January or the first part of February. The plan is to have a retaining wall put in with steps coming down from the playground field. Also a sidewalk, curb & gutter.

Christmas Program

The Christmas Program will be Monday, December 5th from 6-7.

Power Hour

Power Hour has really been helping the students receive the help they need. We have Para's that are trained to use specific programs. They are gathering information weekly and assessing the needs of the students. Power Hour is 40 minutes a day 4 days a week and allows students to learn in smaller groups with other students at their same level. We bought a bunch of programs to help fit the right program to the student instead of just trying to fit every student  to the same program. We feel like Power Hour is one of the reasons we are seeing growth in our SAGE scores. Once we have better mastered Power Hour we will introduce a power hour for math, right now we are just doing language arts.

Veterans Day Assembly

The Veterans Day Assembly will be Friday the 11th at 1:30. It is open to the public. The American Legion is coming to teach our children about the National Anthem. They will teach them about why it was written, what it means, and why we stand for the National Anthem and pledge of allegiance. They will also teach them to fold the flag properly.

PTA

We also talked about whether we should stay with the PTA or go to a PTO program like Gunnison did.
